Discover the Secret to Choosing the Perfect Quilt Batting
Choosing the correct batting for your quilt is a crucial step that impacts both the look and performance of your finished piece. Here are key factors to consider for making an informed decision:
1. Fiber Content
Cotton Batting: Offers a soft, natural feel and is often preferred for its breathability. Ideal for traditional quilts.
Polyester Batting: Provides loft and resilience, making it suitable for quilts that require durability and washability. It’s often less expensive.
Wool Batting: Known for its warmth and lightweight quality, wool is ideal for quilts intended for colder climates. It retains heat well and has a beautiful drape.
Blended Batting: Often combines cotton and polyester for the benefits of both fibers, allowing for flexibility in use and appearance.
2. Loft
Low Loft: Sits closer to the quilt top, resulting in a flatter quilt. Suitable for detailed quilting.
Medium Loft: Provides a balanced appearance and is versatile for various styles and techniques.
High Loft: Offers a plush look but may require more extensive quilting to prevent shifting.
3. Purpose of the Quilt
Bed Quilts: Consider using cotton for comfort and breathability. For a warmer option, wool or a blend could be beneficial.
Wall Hangings: Select a thinner batting to enhance the visual appeal without excessive bulk.
Quilts for Children: Opt for polyester for its durability and ease of care. It withstands frequent washing well.
4. Quilting Method
Hand Quilting: Choose low to medium loft batting that can be easily stitched through.
Machine Quilting: Higher loft batting may be suitable, but ensure your machine can handle the thickness effectively.
5. Desired Weight
Quilts intended for year-round use typically benefit from a medium weight batting, while seasonal quilts might require either a heavy or lightweight batting depending on the time of year.
6. Care Instructions
Consider how the batting will react to washing. Polyester may hold its shape better after multiple washes, while natural fibers may require gentler care.
Conclusion
Selecting the right batting is essential to the overall success of your quilt. Take into account the combination of fiber content, loft, intended use, and care requirements to ensure a result that aligns with your vision. Thoughtful consideration will enhance the beauty and functionality of your quilting project for years to come. The various types of batting are Polyester, Cotton Blends, Wool, and Bamboo. Batting impacts your quilts overall look and feel. Choosing the right quilt batting is essential to the look and feel of the finished piece. Cut the Batting to the same size as the quilt backing. If the batting is folded or wadded up, you can toss it in the dryer on low air to fluff and relax the creases. All-Natural batting manages to be breathable, comfortable, and warm all at the same time.

Your Batting must be 12″ larger than your Quilt Top (6″ each side all the way around), in other words the same size as your Backing. I’m sorry but I do not accept Batting that has been pieced.
Take the narrow side of your quilt, add 12inches, and multiply by $.50. Example: 60” (quilt width) +12” (6” extra batting required on 2 sides) x $.50 = $36.00 for batting.
Sales tax will be added on the invoice for batting.
